Hangul Builder: Learn Korean by AISolve

How to read a Korean menu

Menus in Korean restaurants are often written only in Hangul. The good news: most dish names follow a simple pattern — an ingredient, then a cooking method or dish type. Learn a handful of those words, read the Hangul one block at a time, and you'll have a good idea of what you're ordering.

Korean dish names = ingredient + cooking word

Reading classic dishes one block at a time

Each Hangul block is one syllable, built from a consonant, a vowel and sometimes a final consonant. Split a dish name into blocks and you can sound it out.

김치찌개 split into its four blocks — 김 / 치 / 찌 / 개 — with consonants, vowels and batchim color-coded

How to practice before your trip

  1. Learn the cooking words first — 구이, 찌개, 볶음 and the others in the table above
  2. Sound out dishes you like — split them into blocks as shown above
  3. Try a real menu — a Korean restaurant near you, or the Hangul on a packaged Korean snack
